If you are living with progressive knee pain, stiffness, or difficulty managing daily activities, understanding how your symptoms change over time is one of the most powerful steps you can take.

To help you clearly communicate what you are experiencing, Dr Matthew Liptak, an established orthopaedic surgeon in Adelaide, developed BORIS™ (the Basic Rapid Orthopaedic Indicator Score). Available exclusively through the Adelaide Knee Clinic, BORIS™ is a simple, user-friendly digital questionnaire designed to help patients measure knee pain and function accurately, translating real-world experience into an actionable care plan.

Why Use BORIS™ to Track Your Knee Pain?

When consulting an Adelaide knee specialist or your local General Practitioner (GP), explaining exactly how a joint affects your life can sometimes feel difficult.

The tool looks closely at the two most important areas of your joint health

  • Pain: You will rate the discomfort you have felt during daily activities over the last 7 days.
  • Function: You will rate how much your knee has affected your ability to move and manage daily life over the last 48 hours.

BORIS™ Results

Once you complete these two simple ratings, your scores are combined to place you into one of three easy-to-understand ‘Symptom Zones’. These zones act as a guide for your next medical review or treatment discussion.

Traditional medical questionnaires are often incredibly long, complex, and frustrating for patients to complete. BORIS™ was built to change that by focusing on what truly matters to your lifestyle:

  • Fast and Straightforward: It takes just a couple of minutes to complete.
  • Easy to Understand: It swaps complicated medical jargon for clear, practical results.
  • Built for Action: It helps you and your doctor figure out the next best steps for your knee pain treatment in Adelaide.

Mild Symptoms - Green Zone

Your joint symptoms are considered mild and manageable.

Focus on staying active, joint education, targeted strengthening, conservative physical therapies, and over-the-counter pain management.

Moderate Symptoms - Amber Zone

Your knee pain or function limits are moderately impacting your day-to-day life.

A consultation with your GP is suggested to review and adjust your non-surgical management plan. If maximised conservative treatments are not providing relief, a specialist referral may be discussed.

Severe Symptoms - Red Zone

Your joint symptoms are considered impacting your quality of life.

A comprehensive clinical discussion with your GP and a targeted referral to an orthopaedic surgeon in Adelaide are highly advisable to explore broader treatment options, including potential knee surgery.

Understanding BORIS™

What It Is and What It Is Not

Real-world healthcare recognises that people are far more than just a number; therefore, BORIS™ serves as an extra piece of the puzzle to help ensure your care pathway is clear, interactive, and deeply personalised.

What BORIS™ Is:

  • A structured way to reflect on and monitor your joint pain and mobility over time.
  • A reliable conversation starter to bring to your next GP or specialist appointment to explain exactly how you are feeling.
  • A support tool designed to improve shared understanding and guide next steps in your care.

What BORIS™ Is Not:

  • A medical diagnosis or a standalone piece of medical advice.
  • A replacement for a formal clinical consultation and physical assessment by a qualified doctor.
  • An automatic decision-maker that takes away your choice, or a guarantee of specific treatment or surgical outcomes.
